The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicaryāvatāra) is Śāntideva’s classic work on Mahāyāna philosophy that teaches the preciousness of bodhicitta, the awakened mind, and explains how to practice generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, and meditation while striving to recognize our awakened mind. This important text blends instruction in ethical conduct, meditation, and wisdom to show us how to follow the path of the Bodhisattva. This one-semester course covers Chapters 1 – 5 and the first half of Chapter 6.

The Bodhicaryāvatāra II course continues our study of Śāntideva’s classic text. It begins with the second half of Chapter 6 and continues with Chapters 7 - 10 , including a thorough examination of the famous Wisdom Chapter, Chapter 9. As in Part I, the methodology of the course combines traditional Tibetan monastic word-for-word text commentary with Western-style academic contextualization, mirroring the approach of the courses offered in our on-site classrooms in Kathmandu.

Patience is the subject of Chapter 6 of the Bodhicaryāvatāra. This four-week course explains Śāntideva’s understanding of the importance of patience as the antidote to the anger and discontent that sometimes afflicts us, and the ways that we can cultivate patience in a variety of different circumstances.

This course examines Chapter 9 of The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicaryāvatāra) by Śāntideva, beginning with a short introduction to the first eight chapters of the text to establish the proper context for understanding this chapter. The course then examines Chapter 9 in detail, providing an overview and refutation of various Indian philosophical schools, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist, in order to show the primacy of the Madhyamaka view, the view of the unity of wisdom and emptiness.
